You Know That Your Heater Is In Trouble If…

dog-under-blanketIs it early in the heating season? Yes. Is your heater working its way through the coldest weather of the year already? No, of course not. Is it too early, then, to be talking about heating repairs in Grand Rapids, MI?

Absolutely. Not.

We sincerely hope that, by this point, you have already had your heater tuned up for the year. If you have not, however, we cannot recommend strongly enough that you do so ASAP. This is the best way in which to ensure that your heater is ready for all of the hard work heading its way. Even exceptional maintenance, unfortunately, is not going to make your heater 100% reliable.

That is why it is so important that you learn to spot some common warning signs that your heater is in trouble. After all, the sooner you have your system repaired when trouble arises, the better. Contact a member of our staff immediately if you notice any of the following red flags in your home.

…Your Bills Are Skyrocketing

You don’t need us to tell you how frigid temperatures can get around here during the winter season. A great heater that is appropriately sized for your home and which is expertly installed every step of the way will help you to heat your home successfully regardless. However, the system should also heat your home efficiently if it meets these criteria. You cannot heat your home for free, but you should not be overpaying to do so, either.

If you start to notice that your heating costs are much higher than they’ve been in previous years, check your air filter first. If you use a forced air heating system, then it is possible that a dirty filter is causing it to work at reduced efficiency levels. If the filter is clean and you still have these issues, though, any number of problems could be causing this drop off in efficiency.

…Your Heater Keeps Shutting Down Prematurely

Your heater should not be running around the clock. If it never seems to shut down, then that is a problem in and of itself and you should seek the help of a professional to have the issue resolved. That being said, a heater that is shutting down too soon is the much more common issue. That’s called short cycling, but its negative impact is very long-lasting.

Again, it could be something as simple as a very dirty air filter causing the system to overheat. It could also be something as serious as a refrigerant leak, though! Whatever the case, if the filter is clean, you need to get in touch with us. A short cycling heater will suffer a lot of unnecessary wear and tear, and will waste a lot of energy as it starts up over and over again.

…Your Heater Is Blowing Cool Air

This is probably the most obvious sign of trouble that you could encounter with your heating system. If your heater is blowing cool air, then it is possible that you have leaky air ducts in the system that are letting cool air in. It is also possible that you have thermostat/control issues. As is always the case, a professional assessment and repairs are necessary to resolve the problem properly.
